YUCPC is planning to go to the Durmitor region of Montenegro to prospect for new caves, and to survey any caves we discover. As a club we have been there twice in the past 6 years, once in 2004 and again in 2007. We have contacts with a Serbian caving club which go on expeditions there frequently; their aim of the expedition is to re-survey a 490m cave and its four entrances, which we may be able to assist them with.
Unlike a caving holiday, as we went on for Slovenia, we are trying to discover new caves. This will involve camping in the mountains, at approximately 2000m up. This will be the same camp we used in 2007. During the day you will either be sent out trying to prospect for new caves. You also might be asked to survey a recently discovered cave, or even assist the Serbian club with one of their projects. During the night, we will have to make our own entertainment, this normally would involve, cooking and eating of dinner, and sitting around in the mess tent, generally socialising with other YUCPC members, as well as other people from other countries who will also be involved in the expedition. Please read the expedition reports from Montenegro expeditions in 2004 and 2007 to have a better idea.
The expedition will be happening from the last week of July through to the first two weeks of August, approximately 25th July to the 15th August. These dates may vary by one or two days depending on cost of travel. This will be longer if you are travelling by car. Everyone is more than welcome to stay for some, and not all of the time.
We are currently planning to fly from Heathrow Aiport, to Belgrade, and then taking a bus from Belgrade, to the nearest village to the camp, called Zabljak. Some of us will also be driving from the UK, to carry the heavier gear and such; it will be approximately a three day drive.
Training is very important to meet the required fitness required to go on the expedition. Attending circuits will be compulsory for those who do not do exercise on a regular basis. During the club’s weekends away throughout from term 2 onwards there will be one day designated to hiking and navigation training. There will also be special surveying classes taught by Matt E and Gary, to help us prepare for the surveying of new caves. Laura is also planning on teaching us some Serbian; this will assist us in communicating with the locals, who don’t speak English, as well as the Serbian cavers who will also be on the expo.
Everyone must have their own caving gear to go on expo. A full set of caving gear is required. Outdoor gear such as a 65litre+ rucksack are required, along with a good set of walking boots, and a 4 season sleeping bag (it gets very cold at nights). A full gear list will be included closer to the actual expedition.
At present the estimated cost of the expedition per person is £450 for the three weeks. The price will vary depending on how long you wish to stay. The price may also increase or decrease depending on the amount of grants we are allocated.
The deadline to sign up to the expedition will be 3rd December 2009. And for Freshers it will be 22nd January 2009. The reason we require sign ups so soon is that we require numbers to help us apply for grants. After signing up you will be required to fill in a medical form, and sign to say you have read the risk assessment, these will be provided before the end of term. Please email Toby if you wish to sign up.
