Bull Pot Farm is the home of the Red Rose Cave and Pothole Club. The cottage is situated high on Casterton Fell right next to the Ease Gill cave system offering a large choice of caves and through trips. The building is fitted with full central heating and has a visitors self-catering kitchen and three dormitories with Alpine style bunks (sleeping bags required). The large common room has a wood-burning stove.
Work started in 2008 to restore and re-fit the entire building. The entire changing and gear area has been re-built and new double glazed hardwood windows fitted throughout the building. It has been a long running battle to get the cash to restore the building but now looks set to be one of the best places to stay in Yorkshire for cavers. The rebuild should be mostly completed by summer 2009.
We only stay at Bull Pot about once a year, usually around February (when nothing else interesting happens) and its well worth going. It’s quite remote, but has a large number of caves very close by such as Bull Pot of the Witches, Lancaster Hole, Cow Pot, Wretched Rabbit, Pool Sink and Top Sink, all part of the mammoth Easegill system. There’s more than enough to keep large groups occupied for a long weekend!
The nearest shop is a 15 minute drive away so it is important that you have everything you need for a weekends stay. Food is normally organised communally so there is no need to bring anything to eat apart from snacks and booze! You'll also need a sleeping bag for the bunk room and the normal warm clothes for a caving weekend away.
Because Bull Pot Farm is such a large place and in such high demand, it’s quite likely we'll be staying with members from other clubs, and so is a great opportunity to meet other cavers from other university and non university clubs. |
